DOMINA — Hidden Women of Milan
Revisiting the History of Women in Milan Over 2,000 Years
Through an Integrative Bioarchaeological Framework
DOMINA is an interdisciplinary research project that explores 2,000 years of women’s history in Milan through bioarchaeology, science, and history.
By analyzing skeletal remains, DOMINA reconstructs women’s health, diet, violence, and lived experiences from the Roman period to modern times — revealing how women really lived and challenging assumptions about our history.
The project is directed by Dr. Lucie Biehler-Gomez, Assistant Professor at the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology (LABANOF), Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health, University of Milan.
Funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) under the Fondo Italiano per la Scienza (FIS) program, DOMINA represents the first large-scale study to reconstruct women’s condition across two millennia in a single European city, bridging the gap between science and history to give voice to women of the past and pave the way for a more equitable future.
